Queensland state school classrooms have more support than ever with an extra 8000 teacher aide hours every week in 2016.

Education Minister Kate Jones used Teacher Aide Day to recognise the very special contribution teacher aides make in Queensland classrooms.

“Our teachers deserve to be supported and that’s why we have increased hours for teacher aide by more than 8,000 hours per week in state primary and secondary schools,” Ms Jones said.

“Our teacher aides play a very important role in teaching and learning.

“They work closely with teachers to develop resources, support students’ learning, and assist with practical duties in the classroom.

“They bring a wide range of skills to their work and that has a positive impact on classroom learning and the lives of students.

“Teacher Aide Day is an opportunity for schools, teachers, and students, to show their appreciation for the vital work teacher aides perform in our classrooms every school day.”

Ms Jones said state schools also had greater flexibility to employ teacher aides for additional hours.

“Principals are responsible for making decisions about the allocation of teacher aides to classes across the school,” she said.

“We’re providing $480 million to Queensland state schools through Investing for Success in 2016 and 2017 to support learning in state schools including for schools to purchase additional teacher aide hours.

“We know Prep teacher aides play an important role in supporting students as they begin their primary education journey, particularly at the start of the year as students settle into new routines.”
