$1 million in grants to strengthen Queensland multiculturalism

The Palaszczuk Government has announced $1 million in new funding to help community organisations across Queensland host cultural celebrations, events and multicultural projects.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Grace Grace said 122 organisations would share in the Celebrating Multicultural Queensland grants program in 2016.

“Queensland is a multicultural success story and that means we have a lot to be proud of — and a lot to celebrate,” she said.

“And what better way to promote our diversity than by celebrating through festivals and cultural days incorporating the best of food, music, craft and sport.”

Ms Grace said that multiculturalism was a defining aspect of Queensland life.

“Queensland is home to people who speak more than 220 languages and hold more than 100 religious beliefs,” she said.

“This is a very rich store of culture and traditions for all Queenslanders to share.

“This grants program is a great way to promote inclusion - it’s good for Queenslanders, it’s good for visitors and it’s good for business.”

Grants range from $2,000-$25,000 and are awarded in three categories: signature events, cultural events and multicultural projects.

“This grants boost supports a diverse range of community organisations and groups, allowing them to deliver projects across the state,” Ms Grace said.

“Some of Queensland’s signature cultural events are funded through this program, including the Paniyiri Greek Festival and the 2016 B20 Buddha Birthday Festival.

“There’s also funding for key regional events such as the Bundaberg Multicultural Festival, 7 Nations Pasifika Youth Festival in Cairns and the Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival.

“I am very excited by the range of events and projects planned across the State in 2016 and I’m looking forward to attending as many of them as possible.

“I urge all Queenslanders to attend the festivals and other multicultural events that add so much to our way of life.”
