Miller unveils new drive to recruit Queensland firefighters

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Jo-Ann Miller today announced a new recruitment process for firefighters and urged outstanding individuals to apply before Christmas.

“Today Queensland Fire and Emergency Services is opening applications for recruits for next year’s training program,” Minister Miller said.

“We want the best of the best to be part of that process and to become the next generation of Queensland firefighters.

“It is a challenging and rewarding career and we want to hear from talented individuals from all walks of life who reflect the diversity of our community.”

QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the organisation was looking for men and women with a passion to serve the community to the highest standard.

“This is a new recruitment strategy which moves from a continual process of recruitment to a defined application period,” Ms Carroll said.

“Under the old system, some applicants were on the waiting list for years.

“The overhaul creates a streamlined process where applications will be processed quickly and applicants will have a clear understanding of their status.

“Applications open today and close on Sunday, December 20. The first intake will start their training in April.”

Commissioner Carroll said prospective recruits would undergo extensive assessment.

“All potential recruits will need to advance through a series of cognitive, physical and psychological tests before receiving an offer to join the workforce.

“They will be required to serve anywhere in Queensland and will have a chance to nominate their preferences,” she said.

Information sessions will be held around the state this week and selected locations will have demonstrations of the physical abilities test.
