Schoolies urged to Be Safe and Watch their Mates
Graduating Year 12 students are being encouraged to Be Safe and Watch their Mates at Schoolies.
Minister for Youth and Communities, Shannon Fentiman, congratulated senior students and reminded them to stay safe during the Schoolies holiday period.
“Completing high school is a fantastic achievement and a time to celebrate and have fun,” Ms Fentiman said.
“Schoolies can stay safe by making responsible choices when it comes to alcohol, drugs, online privacy, sexual health and by remembering to stick together with their mates and to call 000 if they find themselves in an emergency.”
The whole-of-government state-wide Safer Schoolies Initiative coordinates and delivers local Community Safety Responses at the Gold Coast, Airlie Beach and Yeppoon to ensure the Schoolies holiday period is as safe as possible for school-leavers, local residents, businesses and the wider community.
Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller said extra officers from around the state had arrived on the Gold Coast to boost local numbers to monitor the event.
"The Palaszczuk Government is committed to keeping our school leavers safe and that's why we've deployed extra police resources to work with Schoolies organisers to keep school leavers safe and make sure they can have a great time," Minister Miller said.
“Of course, most Schoolies have been looking forward to the end of their school years and are keen have some fun. However, we are urging school leavers to take it easy and look after their mates.
“Police will be out in force today and tomorrow as Schoolies arrive on the Gold Coast and book into their accommodation.
“It is important that parents as well as school leavers are aware of the penalties for underage drinkers and the health consequences of excessive alcohol use.
“Parents should also encourage their teenagers to be safe and to watch their mates, think before they drink and know their limitations."
Other tips for Gold Coast Schoolies include:
• If you feel threatened or at risk at any time call Triple Zero (000)
• Stay in a group and look after your mates
• Protect your privacy and remember you cannot control images you put up on social media
• Act responsibly and think before you act
• Take advantage of the many welfare services available to you such as the Schoolies Volunteers and the Red Frog crew
• Make sure you check in with family on a daily, if not regular basis.
Elements of the Safer Schoolies Initiative include a highly visible police presence in Schoolies precincts, additional emergency services, local law and liquor licensing officers and on-site volunteer support and accommodation outreach services.
