Queenslanders are being encouraged to have their say on the operation of the state’s adoption laws, with a consultation being carried out by the Queensland Government.

Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman said it was important to consider the impact of Queensland’s Adoption Act 2009 on children and families.

“Adoption is a very personal and emotional issue for many people who were adopted, or have a relative who was adopted, as well as for people wishing to adopt children,” Ms Fentiman said.

“We know that for a small number of children, adoption is the best way to provide a safe and happy home,” Ms Fentiman said.

“We want to make sure our laws remain current, meet the needs of the children involved and reflect the lessons learned from the past.

“This review provides an opportunity for the government to work with the community to make sure our legislation is up-to-date and reflects best practice and the real-life experiences of children and families.”

The current Act, which came into effect in 2010, sets out the need for a five-year review to ensure the legislation keeps up with changes to modern life and family structures.

All Queenslanders now have the chance to be a part of this process by making a submission as part of the public consultation process.

A discussion paper has been launched to help guide submissions and to provide more information about adoption in Queensland over the last five years.
