Safety works for Kennedy Highway and Malone Road intersection
TRAFFIC will flow more smoothly when major works are completed on a busy intersection of the Kennedy Highway at Malone Road.
Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said the $406,000 project would see a protected right-turn lane installed at the Mareeba intersection to improve driver safety and traffic flow.
“This is the main access to a fast-growing residential area and feedback from locals is that they simply don’t feel safe while waiting for a gap to turn off the highway,” Mr Bailey said.
“We are talking about a major freight route, with about 750 heavy vehicles a day travelling at 100 km/h past this intersection.
“With the road widened and the new protected turning lane, motorists can feel safer on the road as they wait to cross the busy highway.”
Mr Bailey said changed traffic conditions, including traffic controllers and a reduced speed limit, would be in place for the duration of the project for the safety of workers and road users.
“I urge all road users to follow the directions of traffic controllers and always drive to the conditions around road works,” he said.
The upgrade is set to begin next week and is expected to take about six weeks to complete, weather permitting.
