Queenslanders bowled over by new National Cricket Centre
Queensland has cemented its position as the country’s best sporting state with the opening of the new National Cricket Centre in Brisbane today.
Premier Campbell Newman officially opened the $29 million high performance cricket training facility at the Allan Border Field in Albion this morning, alongside Australian captain Michael Clarke and cricketing greats including Greg Chappell and Rod Marsh.
“I’m focused on delivering better infrastructure and facilities for Queenslanders and this world-class National Cricket Centre is another way my CanDo Government is reaching that goal,” Mr Newman said.
“This is an impressive addition to the Allan Border Field precinct, which will provide cutting edge training and development opportunities for our top cricketers, coaches and umpires.
“I can’t wait to see young Queensland cricketers attend this facility as a stepping stone to wearing the Baggy Green.”
The Queensland Government contributed $5 million towards the project, which includes new facilities for cricket training, IT analysis including bowling biomechanics, sports medicine, office space and amenities.
Sport Minister Steve Dickson said the state-of-art facility would give cricket a competitive edge, and help develop the next generation of world-class cricketers.
“We’re focused on getting Queenslanders involved in sport at all levels, and it’s fantastic that our state is now home to the National Cricket Centre which will be instrumental in developing new talent and preparing future Australian teams,” Mr Dickson said.
“The Newman Government wants to see young Queenslanders getting more active, more often, and our flagship $48 million Get in the Game initiative is another way we’re helping ease the cost of living for Queensland families.
"Get in the Game provides grassroots clubs with better equipment and facilities, and also gives children who might not otherwise be able to afford it the opportunity to play sport.”
Mr Dickson said the National Cricket Centre was jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments and Cricket Australia.
