Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services
The Honourable Jack Dempsey
Queensland goes orange for SES volunteers
Some of Queensland’s most iconic landmarks will light up the night sky to show appreciation for the state’s State Emergency Services (SES) volunteers during SES Week which runs from 9 to 17 November 2013.
Brisbane’s Treasury Casino, the Wheel of Brisbane, Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges, The Story Bridge, Gold Coast’s Q1 Skypoint Observation Deck and Townsville’s Jupiters Casino will be illuminated with the colour that has become synonymous with SES volunteers.
Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Jack Dempsey thanked Queensland corporations for their willingness to support the dedicated service SES volunteers deliver, often putting their own needs on hold to assist others.
“To have Queensland’s iconic buildings, without hesitation, show their support to light up orange is very encouraging and we are very grateful for this,” Mr Dempsey said.
“There is no doubt Queenslanders are thankful for the time, effort and personal sacrifices SES volunteers make and SES Week is a great opportunity for everyone to show their appreciation.”
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Lee Johnson said the support and willingness to recognise the fantastic work that the Queensland SES do was humbling and encouraging.
“The distinctive orange SES uniform is worn by volunteers who donate thousands of hours each year to their communities and has come to symbolise the community spirit and resilience of Queenslanders,” Mr Johnson said.
“Some of these iconic landmarks have been impacted by severe weather in the past so it is fitting they are involved in acknowledging the great work of volunteers this SES Week.”
NRMA Insurance Community & Sustainability Manager, Megan Lupton, said when it comes to Queensland’s recovery, the efforts of SES volunteers was invaluable and second to none.
“We are proud to work with the Queensland SES and wish to say a huge thank you to the volunteers for their role in our communities,” Ms Lupton said.
The Queensland SES is proudly supported by Major Partner NRMA Insurance.
