Get trackside at Gold Coast Turf Club for Melbourne Cup

The race that stops the nation is set to be enjoyed by Gold Coast locals and visitors in world class style, with the opening of stage one of the Gold Coast Turf Club (GCTC) redevelopment.

Racing Minister Steve Dickson toured the upgraded facilities today and said the official reopening on Melbourne Cup Day would be an event to remember.

“The Newman Government is rebuilding racing in Queensland after years of Labor neglect, and these major works at the GCTC are an important part of that commitment,” Mr Dickson.

“These major infrastructure improvements will deliver a world class thoroughbred racing facility on the Gold Coast, paving the way for long-term economic benefits for the city.

“The project is being delivered as part of the LNP’s $110 million pledge for racing infrastructure improvements across the state, allowing the club to attract stronger race fields and bring more patrons to the track.”

Mr Dickson said the Stage One works included grandstand improvements, new corporate suites and refurbished bar and restaurant facilities.

“The installation of a new equine swimming pool will round out Stage One of the project, and from there attention will turn to refurbishing the track proper and training facilities,” he said.

GCTC Acting Chairman Arch McDonald said the redevelopment was one of the most significant events in the history of the club, providing a substantial boost for the racing industry and the city.

“This has been great for the local economy and there is still more to come,” Mr McDonald said.

“Gold Coast contractor Alder Constructions has engaged 196 workers on site and 71 off site, with products and services coming from 35 Gold Coast businesses.

“We are delighted with the outcome to date and when the remaining works are complete the Gold Coast will be firmly established as a dominant racing region in Australia.”

Racing Queensland Chairman Kevin Dixon said the Gold Coast was one of Queensland’s fastest growing areas.

“It is fantastic that this community is now served by Queensland’s true third metropolitan standard venue,” Mr Dixon said.
