The Honourable Steve Dickson
A Gold Coast national park is more popular than ever before, hosting a raft of community events and attracting interest as a 2018 Commonwealth Games venue, National Parks Minister Steve Dickson said today.
Mr Dickson said Nerang National Park was becoming a prime location for Queenslanders and visitors to get active, with great recreational trails and facilities.
“The Newman Government is delivering on our promise to open up Queensland’s beautiful national parks for everyone to enjoy, and it’s great to see so many people using Nerang National Park’s fantastic trails and natural beauty,” Mr Dickson said.
“Six running events will take place on the park’s 22 kilometre fire management trails over the next year, including the annual Kokoda Challenge, and the versatile tracks are also used by walkers, 4WD clubs and mountain bike riders.
“The park is also being investigated by the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation as a possible venue for the cross country mountain bike competition.
“This would see the construction of a six kilometre competition-standard mountain bike track in the park.”
Mr Dickson said Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) rangers were continually working to ensure the park’s trails were in good condition.
“As well as the current riding trails, QPWS has partnered with the Gold Coast Mountain Bike Club in a Trail Care Agreement, supporting maintenance and reconstruction works undertaken by club volunteers on a further 41 kilometres of mountain bike trails,” he said.
“QPWS is also working with local 4WD clubs on their ‘adopt-a-track’ agreements which see clubs working to remove major track-side weed infestations in the park to improve amenity and access.”
