PCYC Emergency Services Cadets from the Cooroora Unit have been recognised for the assistance they have provided to State Emergency Services (SES).

Police and Community Safety Minister Jack Dempsey said 11 cadets and their leaders have been helping at events including the Noosa Country Show and King of the Mountain Festival.

“I would like to congratulate the entire Cooroora Unit on the work and support they have provided to the community,” Mr Dempsey said.

“The volunteer hours are much appreciated and are a clear demonstration of leadership.”

Assistant Minister for Emergency Volunteers Ted Malone presented the cadets and leaders with Certificates of Recognition at Noosa District High School today.

“The PCYC Emergency Services Cadet Program provides youth with an opportunity for a career in emergency services and volunteering,” Mr Malone said.

“The Cooroora Unit was the first to open under the new program, giving cadets a chance to experience a wide range of emergency service skills, while having greater interaction with serving staff.

“For 65 years the PCYC has been providing young Queenslanders with everything from sporting opportunities to mentoring programs.

“I am confident the PCYC Emergency Services Cadet Program will produce a fantastic group of community-minded youngsters ready to take the next step to becoming Queensland's best and brightest in uniform.

“Unlike the former Labor Government’s Emergency Cadet program which cost $1.2 million to administer, we have worked hard to negotiate a deal with PCYC that will see an enhanced program for one tenth of the cost.”

The Sunshine Coast North SES also received a Certificate of Recognition to acknowledge their support of the Cadet Unit.

PCYC Emergency Services Cadet Programs are also operating at Biggenden, Inglewood, Childers and Hughenden with Units at Mackay and Hervey Bay expected to commence over the coming weeks.
