The Honourable John McVeigh
Animal health service providers are being encouraged to have their say on improving legislation that covers veterinary science in Queensland.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said the review was being led by an independent steering group of veterinarians.
“The Veterinary Surgeons Act regulates who can practise veterinary science in Queensland,” Mr McVeigh said.
“It is a critical piece of legislation that ensures the highest level of consumer protection and animal welfare under veterinary care.
“In Queensland, we currently have close to 3000 veterinarians who are registered with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Queensland in accordance with the Act.
“To ensure the continued protection of consumers and animals, it’s essential we review the current system of registration and how it’s working.
“This review will identify where red tape and regulation can be reduced to address issues identified by the profession and by users of animal health services.”
Chair of the steering group Associate Professor Robert Hedlefs said some of the issues identified so far include who can provide animal health services, what standards should be in place and how they should be maintained.
“The legislation has been in place since 1936, and the veterinary profession has developed and responded to many changes,” he said.
“We now have non-veterinarians such as animal physiotherapists, chiropractors and equine dentists providing services, as well as professional veterinary nurses and technologists.
“We need to consider how the Act will ensure the best outcome for the animals, the owners of the animals and the people who provide animal health services.
“Through this review we are seeking to ensure the legislation is still working effectively in today’s service environment.”
