Attorney-General and Minister for Justice
The Honourable Jarrod Bleijie
A shakeup of property law in Queensland will see a more streamlined and common sense approach to how Queenslanders buy, sell and manage property.
Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie announced the review today at the annual Living in Strata Body Corporate Trade show on the Gold Coast.
“This review will help unlock activity in the property and construction industries that are vital to the state’s economy,” Mr Bleijie said.
“For too long, these industries have been burdened with unnecessary regulation.
“We are determined to change this, by getting body corporate policy settings right and getting rid of red tape.
Mr Bleijie said the Newman Government will partner with the Queensland University of Technology to review the State’s property law.
“The independent and broad-ranging review will be headed by highly-respected and experienced property law experts, Professor Bill Duncan, Professor Sharon Christensen and Dr Bill Dixon,” Mr Bleijie said.
“In the past year, this government has moved quickly on a range of issues that were an enormous burden on buyers, sellers and the industry, including deleting the requirement to provide sustainability declarations and completing a review on the Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act,” Mr Bleijie said.
“Recently, we amended the BCCM Act by scrapping the requirement to provide a copy of a CMS with the purchase of a home saving numerous pages in contract preparation.
“To put it simply, property law in this state needs a makeover and we are determined to provide a first class framework that will meet the needs of Queenslanders well into the future.
Mr Bleijie invites all Queenslanders to have their say in shaping the review.
“The first two issue papers on seller disclosure requirements and body corporate lot entitlements will be released early in the New Year,” he said.
