The Honourable Jack Dempsey
Rockhampton Police delve into blogosphere
Rockhampton residents will have the chance to log online and chat to police after the Rockhampton myPolice website was launched this afternoon.
Police Minister Jack Dempsey said the blog would boost interaction between police and the public by giving officers another way to keep the community informed in a timely manner.
“The blog features crime prevention tips and lets police officers interact with people who may not be able to attend Neighbourhood Watch meetings or drop into the police station to voice concerns,” Mr Dempsey said.
“Through the blog, police officers are able to share information about personal safety, keeping property secure and show comfit images or stills from CCTV to a wider audience.”
Mr Dempsey said myPolice Rockhampton joined a number of blogs released around the state including Bundaberg, Maryborough, Cairns and the Gold Coast.
“Engaging with the community is one of the most important aspects of being a police officer,” he said.
Queensland Police Serve Acting Deputy Commissioner Peter Barron said the launch of myPolice Rockhampton was an exciting opportunity for police to engage with the community.
“The police here in Rockhampton do a fantastic job within the community,” Acting Deputy Commissioner Barron said.
“myPolice Rockhampton will give local police a stronger online presence, allowing them to strengthen their bonds with the community and engage with them on a new level.
“This blog provides a platform not only for local residents to engage in a two-way conversation with police, but also for visitors to the area to find out about their new surroundings.
“The immediacy of communication through myPolice Rockhampton will allow officers to target crime and collect community feedback at a grass roots level.
“Through our partnerships with the community, we’ll continue our commitment to provide safe and secure communities and we welcome feedback from the public on how to do this better.
“This year we have seen a significant number of road incidents as several major highways converge into Rockhampton.
“Situations like these highlight the importance of accurate and timely information. The updates provided through the Queensland Police Service Facebook page at the time of these incidents proved invaluable for residents.
“Should Rockhampton be in this position again, the myPolice blog will be a hub for crucial information for residents and visitors including updates on road closures, weather conditions, and other vital public safety information.
“I would encourage everyone who lives in the area to visit myPolice Rockhampton, share your thoughts, and leave some comments on how we can improve the site.”
