New QPS Deputy Commissioner announced

Police Minister Jack Dempsey today announced the appointment of Steve Gollschewski APM to the new role of Deputy Commissioner, Strategy, Policy and Performance.

Mr Gollschewski’s position will oversee the Strategy and Business Review Command, Ethical Standards Command, Education and Training Command, Legal Division and Crime and Misconduct Commission Police Group.

Mr Gollschewski is presently the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Assistant Commissioner for the North Coast Region, a position he has held since March 2012.

Mr Dempsey said Mr Gollschewski brought a wealth of experience to the role.

“This is an important new position which will provide the building blocks for how the QPS will be delivered, managed, measured and reformed,” Mr Dempsey said.

“Just as importantly Mr Gollschewski will be in charge of identifying and cutting red tape allowing police officers more time to do the policing work they signed up for and not sitting behind desks doing unnecessary paperwork.

“I wish him well in his new role and look forward to working with him.”

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said Mr Gollschewski was already a proven achiever and would make a valuable contribution to both the executive and the entire QPS.

“Mr Gollschewski has spent more than 30 years in the QPS and has exceeded in every role he’s undertaken around the State,” Commissioner Stewart said.

“I have no doubt he will excel in this role and the entire QPS organisation will benefit from the work he and his team will carry out.”

Mr Gollschewski said he was honoured and privileged to be selected for such a key leadership role.

“Being appointed to lead such an important area of policing for our community in this great State is both a significant honour and responsibility,” Mr Gollschewski said.

“My focus will be on assisting the Commissioner to deliver better quality, performance and value for money in policing services while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and accountability and giving our police the tools and support they need to perform their roles more effectively.”

Deputy Commissioner Gollschewski’s Career Highlights:

Mr Gollschewski was born in Brisbane and undertook schooling at Mt Gravatt.

He was inducted into the Queensland Police Service on August 1, 1980, working as a constable performing general duties in Maroochydore, Brisbane and Dalby.

In 1983, he started working in plain clothes later attaining his detective’s qualifications in Brisbane before working as a Detective Sergeant at the Joint Organised Crime Task Force from 1991.

Mr Gollschewski worked at Boondall CIB in 1996 and then on the Carter Inquiry as a Detective Senior Sergeant in 1997, before moving to Ethical Standards Command where he was promoted to Inspector in 1998.

Mr Gollschewski was promoted to the rank of Superintendent in State Crime Operations Command in 2004 where he was the manager of the State Intelligence Group until 2008.

He was promoted to Chief Superintendent of Central Region in 2008 and then the Assistant Commissioner of Southern Region in 2010 where he led the operational response to the Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley disasters in 2011.

He took command of North Coast Region in March 2012 and from August 2012 led the review of the Queensland Police Service which culminated in the restructure of the Service to take effect on July 1, 2013.

Mr Gollschewski has postgraduate qualifications in leadership and management, is a graduate of the AFP Management of Serious Crime Program, the AFP/FBI Leadership in Counter-Terrorism Program and is a visiting fellow to the Australian Institute of Police Management.

Mr Gollschewski was awarded the Australian Police Medal in the 2010 Australia Day honours list. He has been awarded the Queensland Police Service Medal, National Medal and Queensland Flood and Cyclone Citation.
