Minister for Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services
The Honourable Tracy Davis
Bundaberg and North Burnett communities will receive a $5 million community recovery package to help residents move into the next phase of rebuilding their lives following ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald earlier this year.
Visiting the Bundaberg Community Recovery and Referral and Information Centre, Communities Minister Tracy Davis said the funding package, comprises three programs to support community-led recovery initiatives, individuals and family counselling and a community health program.
“This funding isn’t just about moving into the next phase of our long-term recovery plan. It’s about stitching the fabrics of these communities back together,” Ms Davis said.
“UnitingCare Community will receive $2.32 million to deliver a personal support program to provide counselling and support to individuals and families, who are experiencing personal, social or emotional difficulties following the January floods,” Ms Davis said.
“The package also includes $1.28 million for community development. Delivered through the Bundaberg and North Burnett regional councils, four new community development officers will work with the region planning and coordinating projects that help reconnect community groups and build a resilient future.
“A further $1.4 million will provide funding to promote community mental health and provide specialist support to individuals. The program will be managed by the Department of Health.
Ms Davis said the services will be delivered over two years from 1 July 2013, with funding delivered under the Natural Disasters Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
Member for Bundaberg Jack Dempsey said the funding would assist Bundaberg residents to move forward, building a strong and resilient community.
“The Newman Government is supporting people in Bundaberg with the resources and tools we need to move forward with our lives and rebuild our community,” Mr Dempsey said.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said it was important that disaster-affected individuals, families and communities had the ongoing support needed for their recovery into the future.
“These funds demonstrate that the Newman Government’s long-term commitment to the Burnett community,” Mr Bennett said.
“Our work in these areas is not complete, so we will continue our efforts to aid the recovery of local residents and communities.”
Since ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald hit the region in January, the Newman Government has delivered support, information, and referrals to residents affected by the natural disaster; including more than 9,200 community recovery grants.
