Cairns scores with new sports fields

Players across a wide range of sporting codes are celebrating a huge win with an upgrade to a Cairns multipurpose sporting precinct officially opened by Sports Minister Steve Dickson.

Mr Dickson said a $569,000 project to construct two new multipurpose fields at the Manunda Sporting Precinct was vital in catering for existing users, as well as anticipated growth in the region.

“The Newman Government is committed to investing in grassroots sporting and community clubs across the state, and projects like these are another example of our determination to get more Queenslanders involved in active lifestyles,” Mr Dickson said.

“The new multipurpose fields will complement current fields and the indoor recreation centre, giving Manunda a whole new lease on life and maximising participation at the facility.

“This upgrade which was built by the Cairns Regional Council through the Newman Government’s Sport and Recreation Infrastructure program, will go a long way in attracting new members to clubs from across the local community.”

Member for Cairns Gavin King said the Manunda Sporting Precinct had served the local community for many years.

“Already home to North Cairns AFL, Brothers Rugby Club, Edge Hill United Football Club and Cairns Junior Cricket; Manunda will now be able to welcome even more clubs to its expanded facilities,” Mr King said.

“Additionally, the Newman Government is providing help to thousands of Queenslanders by reducing the costs of club registrations and funding better equipment and infrastructure through our flagship Get in the Game funding program, which was recently given a major boost to $47 million over the next three years.

“It’s another way we’re easing the cost of living for Queensland families.”

Edge Hill United Football Club Vice-President Sam Ferguson said the new fields will create more opportunities for their growing membership base and for community groups who wish to use the facility.

“We can now rotate between fields and therefore the facility will be open all year round, creating more flexibility between club members and community groups,” Mr Ferguson said.
