The Honourable Glen Elmes
African festival celebrates solidarity
Be sure to visit the lawns of African House in East Brisbane on Sunday 26 May as Queensland’s African communities come together to celebrate the Africa Day Festival.
The festival recognises Africa Day which is internationally observed on 25 May to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963 - now known as the African Union.
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes said the festival recognises and celebrates African solidarity, and also showcases the diverse cultural heritage and traditions of African Queenslanders.
Mr Elmes said the Newman Government was pleased to provide $6,000 to support the Africa Day celebrations through the Multicultural Partnerships Program.
“The Africa Day Festival is a significant event for Queensland’s African communities, not only for recognising their past, but for sharing their culture and traditions with the wider community,” Mr Elmes said.
“With more than 58,800 Queenslanders coming from more than 30 African countries, this is a significant day for many Queenslanders and a great opportunity to learn more about Africa.
“Festival goers will be able to experience the cultures and customs of community groups from Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Somalia, Sudan, Rwanda and Sierra Leone with a program of dance and music.”
Mr Elmes said there will also be displays of African arts, clothing and food to enjoy, as well as a fashion show and workshops on African drumming and other cultural traditions.
Organised by the Queensland African Communities Council, the Africa Day Festival will take place on Sunday 26 May 2013 from 10am to 5pm at the African House Lawns, 38 Lytton Road, East Brisbane.
