New glider refuge for Brisbane’s south

The first important steps have been taken towards the creation of a glider refuge on Brisbane’s south side with clean-up work soon to begin on a parcel of land along the Flinders Karawatha Corridor.

Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps and Member for Algester Anthony Shorten MP announced $300,000 towards a fencing and clean-up project while visiting the site today.

“The parcel of land, known locally as the Glider Forest, is situated on the corner of Paradise Road and Johnson Road at Larapinta, and has unfortunately become an illegal dumping ground over the past few years,” Mr Cripps said.

“My department will manage a clean up of the site to remove a significant amount of asbestos and general rubbish including tyres, dumped cars, vegetation, chemicals and building materials. The removal of asbestos will be a priority.

“A secure fence will also be constructed around the site to prevent the dumping of rubbish, and the 125 hectare site will then be reclassified as an environmental reserve.”

Mr Cripps said his department was working with Brisbane City Council to establish a long-term plan for management of the land once it had become an environmental reserve.

“The Glider Forest forms an integral part of the Flinders Karawatha Corridor,” he said.

“Liaising closely with Council to determine the site’s future management makes perfect sense, given they also manage an adjacent block which also forms part of the Corridor.

“The clean-up work and fence construction is scheduled to be finished by the middle of the year.”

Clive Jacobs from the Forestdale Bushcare Group said the clean-up of the site was an important step, and has welcomed plans to reclassify the land as an environmental reserve.

“The Glider Forest is home to endangered plants and animals, including the Powerful Owl and several glider species, so it is important that we protect this area,” he said.

Mr Cripps praised Anthony Shorten for his continued commitment to this project.

“Mr Shorten has advocated strongly for the allocation of this funding, and has been essential in achieving this is a great outcome for local residents and the natural environment in Larapinta.”
