Port Moresby: Premier Campbell Newman has cemented trade relations between Queensland and Papua New Guinea, signing an historic agreement with Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.
In the capital Port Moresby to renew a Memorandum of Understanding on business cooperation, Mr Newman said Papua New Guinea’s close proximity made Queensland an ideal trading partner and supplier of goods and services.
“Queensland’s industries have already played a vital role in the development of Papua New Guinea,” Mr Newman said.
“In the 21st year of this agreement, we have renewed our emphasis on working together in a range of industries including agriculture, resources, construction, infrastructure and education.
“The agreement has been broadened to include a revitalised Papua New Guinea and Queensland business cooperation group to form partnerships and identify opportunities in key sectors.
“The body will be made up of private sector and government representatives and will strengthen ties between Queensland and our closest international neighbour.
“Our regions share a long and enduring cultural connection, and over the years this friendship has developed into a highly productive business relationship.
“Our Government is committed to supporting Queensland’s industries to work with this region, and I thank Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, the Honourable Peter O'Neill, for his support in re-signing this agreement.
“Both of our regions have relatively new governments with a strong commitment to driving development of our industries, growth in our regions and innovation in our economies.
“This visit is about reaffirming to Papua New Guinea that we are serious about doing business in a spirit of partnership.”
Premier Newman is in Papua New Guinea from 14-15 May with 15 Queensland companies and organisations, promoting business opportunities for the State.
