Minister for Natural Resources and Mines
The Honourable Andrew Cripps
Work begins on Cosgrove Residential Project
Townsville will receive a significant boost to its housing and land availability after the start of construction on a new residential project in the west of the north Queensland city.
Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps today visited the site of the Cosgrove Residential Project in the foothills of Mount Louisa, which will consists of 2,700 lots.
“This project promises to deliver much needed housing and infrastructure to Townsville at a time when the city is experiencing growing pressure,” Mr Cripps said.
“The suburb of Cosgrove, which was named after retired Australian Army General and Chief of the Defence Force Peter Cosgrove, will house thousands of families, shops and other businesses.
“The development includes plans for parks and open spaces, as well as an environmental corridor along the Bohle River.
“This is an important project for families looking to buy their first home in one of Townsville’s fastest growing area, and over the life of this project, I expect to see Cosgrove develop into a thriving community hub.”
Mr Cripps said his Department had granted the project’s developer, Parkside Development, a 20-year Development Lease over 270 hectares of the 320 hectare site.
“The Queensland Government put this parcel of land to tender in 2008, and following interest from around Australia the tender was awarded to a local company, Parkside Development, in 2009,” he said.
“Parkside has met all the conditions required by the State and has obtained development approval from the Townsville City Council, and I am pleased to announce they have now begun construction of this important new project.
“Development of the Cosgrove Residential Project will mean Townsville can accommodate increasing residential growth on the Bohle Plains.
“The first round of land releases will occur in August of this year, and by mid-2014 we hope to have Cosgrove’s first residents in their homes.”
