Minister for Housing and Public Works
The Honourable Tim Mander

World class cyclone shelters open in Bowen and Proserpine

Minister for Housing and Public Works Tim Mander officially opened new category five cyclone shelters at Proserpine State School and Bowen State High School today.

Ten cyclone shelters are being delivered throughout north Queensland under a $60 million program, jointly funded by the Queensland Government and the Government of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

“Living with the threat of cyclones is a part of life in north Queensland,” Mr Mander said.

“In recent years, Cyclones Yasi and Larry have left a trail of destruction across the region and shelters like these are essential to make sure residents are protected in the event of future cyclones.

“The shelters, built by Paynter Dixon, are capable of withstanding winds of more than 300 kilometres an hour, as experienced in a category five cyclone.

“At more than 1,500 square metres, they can provide shelter for up to 800 people and are equipped with features to ensure people’s comfort and safety, such as a backup generator, a kitchen, 10 toilets and five showers.”

Mr Mander said the shelters would not have been possible without the $30 million donation from the Government of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Mr Faisal Saif Almazrouei, Third Secretary at the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was on hand today to participate in the official opening.

“The UAE highly values its relationship with Australia and is honoured to have contributed towards this important initiative for the State of Queensland and the communities of Proserpine and Bowen,” Mr Almazrouei said.

As well as offering protection during a cyclone, Mr Mander said the shelters would be used by schools and local communities throughout the year.

“These are multi-purpose facilities that allow netball, basketball and other sports to be played, and can also serve as a modern function venue for the community.”
