Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection
The Honourable Andrew Powell

The Newman Government has given dozens of communities the power to care for their local environment with the roll out the first round of Everyone’s Environment grants.

Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Andrew Powell has announced 41 recipients under the first phase of Round One of the program which encourages Queenslanders to monitor and help preserve the local environment.

“From Cape York to Condamine, from Mount Isa to Maroochydore, there is fantastic work being done by tireless volunteers, eager young school kids and enthusiastic environmental groups,” Mr Powell said.

“The Newman government wants to support this great work and put the green movement back where it belongs - in the hands of community groups which want to look after their own backyard, and that’s exactly what these grants will do.

Mr Powell said grants ranging from $2,000 to $100,000 had been approved in the first round of the scheme, which will provide $12 million to community-based groups over the next three years.

“We received more than 200 submissions for Round One grants, totalling almost $9 million in funding requests,” he said.

“These included proposals to restore community and school gardens, develop and manage native habitats to encourage the return of threatened species, small and large clean up projects and weed and pest management regimes.

Mr Powell congratulated the successful organisations which will receive almost $1,300,000 in total.

“Once complete, these projects will produce real environmental benefits and go a long way to helping restore some of Queensland’s damaged ecosystems.”

Grants target established local community groups that support or protect the natural environment, including:

·         Parents and Citizens’ groups on behalf of public and private schools

·         Landcare, Coastcare, Bushcare, Rivercare groups

·         established and emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups

·         local Scout and Girl Guide groups

·         Rotary and Lions groups

·         catchment groups, and

·         environmental and conservation organisations

Mr Powell said further announcements about successful first round recipients would take place in January 2013.

Round Two applications will be called in the middle of next year.
