Environment grants improve cassowary corridor

A cassowary habitat corridor in the Bulguru rainforest area will receive a clean-up thanks to the Newman Government’s Everyone’s Environment grants.

Member for Hinchinbrook Andrew Cripps said the Johnstone Ecological Society will receive $7,189 in funding to improve and protect the area around the headwaters of Ninds Creek which flows into the Johnstone River.

“By improving and maintaining our wetlands and wildlife we can continue to draw tourists to the region and deliver environmental and economic benefits to the whole Innisfail and Cassowary Coast community,” Mr Cripps said.

The Bulguru area is in the headwaters of Ninds Creek, the last major tributary of the Johnstone River.  The area is of primary significance as it is a recognised corridor/linkage that provides food for cassowaries in the times when other fruit is scarce.

Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection, Andrew Powell said Everyone’s Environment grants will provide $12 million in funding to practical environmental projects over the next three years.

“We received more than 200 submissions for Round One grants, totalling almost $9 million in funding requests," Mr Power said.

"Nearly $1.3 million will be allocated under the first phase of the grants program with further announcements of successful first-round recipients to take place in January 2013.”

Applications for round two of the grants will be called in the middle of next year.
