Grant delivers better environment for kindy kids

More than 340 native trees will be planted in a local kindergarten in Ashgrove as part of the Newman Government’s Everyone’s Environment program.

Premier and Member for Ashgrove Campbell Newman said C & K Oakleigh Kindergarten’s Western Garden project was one of 41 groups to receive funding  as part of the first phase of the program that aims to involve everyday Queenslanders in protecting the state’s environment.

“This government wants to support the grassroots community groups and the great work they do to look after their own backyard,” Mr Newman said.

“Projects such as these deliver real environmental outcomes on the ground and tangible benefits within local communities.”

The project will see more than 340 trees native to the area planted as part of a larger project being to transform the Kindergarten garden area in to a playspace that can be used for educational purposes.

Mr Newman said the kindergarten would receive more than $5,000 for the project which will enhance the natural beauty of the Ashgrove community.

“The program offers opportunities to educate young children about the environment, farming, water conservation and many other aspects of the wider community,” he said.

Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection, Andrew Powell said Everyone’s Environment grants will provide $12 million in funding to practical environmental projects over the next three years.

“We received more than 200 submissions for Round One grants, totalling almost $9 million in funding requests,” Mr Powell said.

“Nearly $1.3 million will be allocated under the first phase of the grants program with further announcements of successful first-round recipients to take place in January 2013.”

Applications for round two of the grants will be called in the middle of 2013.
