Minister for Police and Community Safety
The Honourable Jack Dempsey
The Wynnum Police District is the latest Queensland Police Service (QPS) to join the blogging revolution with the launch of myPolice Wynnum yesterday.
Police Minister Jack Dempsey launched the blog and said myPolice Wynnum would boost interaction between police and the public by providing information which would be available to the public around the clock.
“The blog will feature crime prevention tips and let police officers interact with people who may not have time to go to a Neighbourhood Watch meeting or drop into a police station to voice concerns,” Mr Dempsey said.
“This blog lets officers share information on staying safe, keeping property secure or to show comfit images of suspects to a wider audience.”
Mr Dempsey said the Wynnum myPolice blog was the tenth police blog in Queensland following the Gold Coast, Dutton Park, Maryborough, Cairns, Gympie, Mt Isa, Redcliffe, South Brisbane and one dedicated to the Stock and Rural Crime Investigation Squad.
“The nine current blogs have already proven to be successful; for example, more than 5000 people have viewed myPolice Redcliffe since it was launched last Monday,” he said.
“Engaging in the community is one of the most important aspects of being a police officer and these blogs allow police to swap information with a broad section of the public in an efficient and easy manner.”
Acting Assistant Commissioner Brent Carter said the launch of myPolice Wynnum provided a great opportunity for local police to engage with the community online.
“Our officers do a fantastic job within the community, and myPolice Wynnum will strengthen those bonds through a stronger online presence,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Carter said.
“The immediacy of communication through myPolice Wynnum will enable officers to target crime and collect community feedback at a grass roots level.”
Details of crimes – as well as photographs and comfits of offenders – can be posted on the blog immediately after an offence is reported.
“The QPS has been recognised both nationally and internationally for our use of social media. myPolice Wynnum will link to the QPS Facebook page which has the largest following of any police organisation in the world with over 319, 264 likes,” he said.
