Minister for Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services
The Honourable Tracy Davis
Young people around Cairns, Atherton Tablelands and Innisfail will benefit from a new specialist sexual abuse counselling service thanks to a Newman Government election commitment to support vulnerable children.
Child Safety Minister Tracy Davis said Family Planning Queensland would receive $250,000 each year for four years to deliver this service.
“A funded service has not existed before in far north Queensland and this is another way the Newman Government is delivering for at risk children in regional Queensland,” Ms Davis said.
“This service will provide specialist counselling services for children who have experienced sexual abuse.
“We want to see these children supported and helped through this traumatic experience and the counselling will be provided by qualified and experienced practitioners.
“The service will also provide support and advice to members of the child’s family or their carer.”
Preparations are underway for the service to commence in the new year.
Member for Cairns Gavin King welcomed the funding announcement, saying this service would be a welcomed support for young people in the area.
“The Newman Government cares about the safety and wellbeing of Queensland’s children,” Mr King said.
“It’s great that far north Queensland is receiving this specialist service to help give children the chance of a brighter future.”
The Newman Government has also recently announced $500,000 over four year for the Kids Help Line, to provide counselling and support to children and young people in regional and remote Queensland.
