The Honourable Campbell Newman
Premier launches Surf Safe Appeal
Premier Campbell Newman has kickstarted the 2012 Surf Safe Summer Appeal by presenting a $50,000 cheque on behalf of all Queenslanders.
Mr Newman said it was vitally important to get behind Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) and the appeal, to ensure the safety of our world-class beaches.
“Last year alone our volunteer surf lifesavers saved more than 2,800 lives and spent more than 335,000 hours on patrol,” Mr Newman said.
“Our Government recognises the important work SLSQ does in keeping the community safe and I am thrilled to be able to make this donation on behalf of the people of Queensland.
“SLSQ has a goal to raise $1 million and I urge everyone throughout the State to show their appreciation for our volunteers and give what they can during the appeal.”
Mr Newman said the Surf Safe Summer Appeal was the largest annual fundraising initiative for SLSQ and all money raised went to ensuring volunteers had the necessary equipment, training and resources they need to keep our beaches safe.
“Every summer, without fail, these brave and committed Queenslanders take to our beaches to keep us safe and to save lives, and every summer they do a remarkable job,” he said.
“Let’s get behind the red and yellow army and help them achieve their goal.”
A $50 donation will buy a Patrol Pack which contains some of the most commonly used items such as resuscitation masks, a whistle and gloves. It costs $120 to purchase a rescue tube, while a defibrillator costs $5,000.
The volunteer door knock and street appeal will run from 19 November to 2 December.
