A beautification project for the Mount Isa Sunset Memorial Cemetery has been completed thanks to joint Queensland Government and Mount Isa City Council funding.
Housing and Public Works Minister Dr Bruce Flegg said the Queensland Government contributed $15,000 from the Community Memorials Restoration program for the project.
“The Mount Isa Sunset Memorial Cemetery plays an important role in the Mount Isa community with locals and visitors tracing their history to the city’s pioneers buried there,” Dr Flegg said.
“This funding was used to improve the cemetery grounds including restoring the general appearance of the older section of the cemetery and improving visitor access to the grave sites.
“The new gravel ground cover will ensure that the ground isn’t muddy when wet and in dry times it will not be as dusty.
“A plot numbering system at the foot of each grave site to improve identification was also re-established.
“Many of the region’s earliest settlers are buried in this cemetery, with the first burial dating back to 1929.
“It’s important that communities protect their unique histories for future generations.
“That’s why I’m delighted that the Newman Government was able to contribute funds to this project.”
In the current round of funding, more than 50 restoration projects across Queensland are benefiting from Community Memorials Restoration Program grants, totalling more than $500,000 in funding.
