Stockyard Point upgrade to increase Central Coast tourism

An upgrade project in Byfield National Park near Yeppoon has made a popular tourist spot safer and more accessible, National Parks Minister Steve Dickson said today.

Mr Dickson said Stockyard Point’s $284,000 makeover, including a new lookout, parking area and beach access track were now open for locals and visitors to enjoy.

“The Newman Government is committed to opening up our beautiful national parks land for all Queensland residents and visitors to enjoy, and projects like this one is just one of the ways we are delivering on that promise,” he said.

“The Point is well-used by visitors and residents as a lookout and scenic photo spot with great views of Five Rocks Point for whale watching and access to the beach, but it had developed with no planning and had become very eroded and degraded.

“Now locals and visitors can enjoy improved lookout facilities, car parking and a defined walking track down to the beach.

“We’re focused on building tourism as one of the four pillars of Queensland’s economy, and eco-tourism and enhanced visitor amenities form a vital part of that goal.”

Mr Dickson said the upgrade was a real community effort, with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) working with the Stockyard Point Residents Committee and Traditional Owners over the course of the project.

“The Stockyard Point Rural Fire Brigade also provided logistical support during the construction phase and is still involved, watering the trees planted to restore the area,” he said.

“The Stockyard Point site redevelopment is part of an overall upgrade program of a number of visitor facilities at Byfield. 

“These capital works are designed to provide a range of opportunities for enjoying the area to attract a more diverse range of visitors and encourage longer stays in the region.”
