Minister for Education, Training and Employment
The Honourable John-Paul Langbroek

School students recognised for artistic flair

Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek has congratulated Queensland’s top senior visual art students who are the recipients of this year’s Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art.

Mr Langbroek said 32 Year 11 and 12 award recipients would have their art work displayed in Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art next year.

“The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art showcases the exceptional work of student artists, the outstanding skills of our teachers, and the high quality of visual art programs in Queensland schools,” Mr Langbroek said.

“These budding young artists have spent many months at school creating some amazing art works for their senior assessment.

“They have used paint, sculpture, multi-media, photography and more to explore a wide range of themes and in some cases made some very bold statements about the issues that young people are concerned with.

“Their work has been chosen from more than 500 student submissions state-wide to feature in next year’s exhibition at GoMA, which will look right at home on the same walls that have hosted some of the world’s best known contemporary artists.”

Mr Langbroek said the award recipients were in Brisbane this week taking part in a four day workshop with professional artists.

“Award recipients come from state and non-state schools throughout Queensland, so many have travelled to Brisbane to work with professional artists, visit the state’s finest art galleries and receive their certificates,” he said.

“With QTAC submissions closing this week (28 September), this workshop is designed to give them a chance to explore their post-schooling options before finalising any decisions for next year.”

Mr Langbroek said award recipients were selected by a state panel, consisting of representatives from the Queensland Studies Authority, Queensland College of Art and Queensland University of Technology.

A further seven students – one from each education region – were recognised with S & S Regional Encouragement Awards. A full list of award recipients follows.
