Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing
The Honourable Steve Dickson
Sport Minister Steve Dickson will cheer on more than 700 participants taking part in the Moreton Bay Triathlon at Pelican Park in Redcliffe this Sunday, September 23.
Mr Dickson said he’d be there to congratulate competitors as they crossed the finishing line.
“The Newman Government is very pleased to support this great community event by providing $20,000 in funding through Triathlon Queensland,” Mr Dickson said.
“I’m determined to get more Queenslanders involved in sporting and active lifestyles and what better way to get started than by using the beautiful Moreton Bay as a backdrop to enjoy.”
Mr Dickson said the Triathlon is the third of six events in the Triathlon Queensland State Series.
Competitors accrue points throughout the series in order to determine final age group winners for both males and females.
“There’s a challenge for all ages, with six age categories starting at ‘Mini Kids’ for children aged from seven to nine,” he said.
“For the younger age groups, the focus is on participation in a friendly and supportive sporting environment, with the emphasis on enjoyment rather than competition.”
Mr Dickson said he wanted all Queenslanders to get involved in sport from an early age and have access to sporting opportunities wherever they live in Queensland.
“That’s why the Newman Government has committed to supporting them through our $18 million Get in the Game initiative.
“Get in the Game is about providing better equipment and facilities at the grassroots level and giving children who might not otherwise be able to afford it the chance to get involved with sport.
“Our local focus could also inspire some of our future sporting stars. Students as young as 10 years old going to school today will be eligible to compete at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.”
