Premier Campbell Newman has congratulated the Northern Territory’s Chief Minister elect Terry Mills after his election victory yesterday.
Mr Newman said he looked forward to working with Mr Mills on a range of issues.
“I phoned Terry Mills last night to congratulate him on his election win, the first for a conservative leader in the Northern Territory since 1997,” Mr Newman said.
“We discussed several issues facing northern Australia and promised to work together to address them.
“In particular we both want to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to see real and positive economic outcomes, with a focus on jobs and opportunity.
“Mr Mills and I both support holding a summit to discuss how best to move forward in the development of the country’s north and the ongoing progression for Indigenous Australians.
“The LNP in Queensland wants to break the welfare cycle and work with communities, especially in the areas of alcohol management and home ownership.
“A summit would be a positive step forward in addressing those areas of concern.”
Mr Newman said the big win by the CLP in the Northern Territory showed how concerned people continued to be with the Labor Party.
“Mr Mills is facing many of the same issues we have here and campaigned strongly on the economy and bringing the budget back into surplus,” he said.
“Labor governments have this fanciful belief that they can spend as much money as they like without any consequences.
“Prime Minister Julia Gillard should take note. It’s happening now federally and it happened for far too long in our State.
“Like Queenslanders, Northern Territory voters saw the importance of stabilising the finances and balancing the budget.
“We’re determined to do that in Queensland and I know Mr Mills will make a big impact in the Northern Territory as well.
