Minister for Police and Community Safety
The Honourable Jack Dempsey
Police and Community Safety Minister Jack Dempsey has congratulated more than 40 police officers from the Coomera district who were awarded with National Medals and Clasps at a ceremony this morning.
Mr Dempsey said the awards acknowledged those who had served more than 15 years within Australian jurisdictions.
He presented National Medals and Clasps, QPS Medals and Clasps, Assistant Commissioner’s Certificates and Detective Appointments.
“These officers have contributed decades of their life to a broad cross section of duties such as policing, community safety and crime prevention, work in Police Beats, communications, forensics and criminal investigations,” Mr Dempsey said.
“Time is one of the true tests of loyalty and these awards acknowledge the long service and duties undertaken by the members of the Coomera Police District.
“I would like to thank each and every one of them for their service.”
Four current members received National Medals, including four who received the 1st Clasp – Inspector Roger Wilson, Senior Sergeant Bruce Tracey, Senior Sergeant Daniel Underwood and Senior Constable Mark Simpson.
Senior Constable Simpson was also presented with the Assistant Commissioner’s Certificate (Operational) by Assistant Commissioner South Eastern Region, Graham Rydners.
This award was for his measured and skilled restraint of an armed offender who threatened the life of the attending officers and himself in September 2008.
Also receiving an award from Assistant Commissioner Rynders was Senior Sergeant Shane Bourke in recognition of the work undertaken as Project Manager for the South Eastern Regional Police Communications Centre and refurbishment of the Beenleigh Police Station.
Mr Innes Larkin received the Assistant Commissioner Certificate of Appreciation.
In June 2011, Mr Larkin assisted police and SES in the rescue of four stranded climbers on Mount Lindesay, where one of their companions had fallen to his death.
Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson also attended and said policing has always been, and will continue to be, a demanding profession.
“It is in the response to incidents such as these, that our people rely on their training and also members of the community to bring them to the best possible resolution,” Commissioner Atkinson said.
He presented nine members with the 20 Year Clasp, nine with the 15 Year Clasp and nine with their initial QPS Medal.
Commissioner Atkinson congratulated each of the recipients and thanked them for their ongoing commitment to the QPS.
“The ceremony today is a welcome opportunity to recognise the standard of dedication, diligence and ethical conduct displayed over their careers in the QPS,” Commissioner Atkinson said.
“These officers and staff members showcase a diverse range of desirable talents, skills and attributes as they play their vital part in maintaining a high level of community safety, as well as personal and property security.”
