The Honourable Ros Bates
Queenslanders in regional areas will be able to see and listen to one of Europe’s great orchestras next month – for free.
As part of The Hamburg Season at QPAC, The Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra is to play to audiences in six regional centres across the State via a live simulcast on Friday 24 August.
Arts Minister Ros Bates today announced that venues in Bundaberg, Cairns, Mackay, Mt Isa, Toowoomba and Townsville would receive a live simulcast of Gustav Mahler’s epic Symphony No 2, Resurrection, from the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s Concert Hall.
“One of the LNP’s election commitments was to ensure all Queenslanders have the opportunity to experience great arts and culture,” Ms Bates said.
“This live simulcast of the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring artists from Hamburg State Opera, certainly supports that promise.”
Ms Bates said The Hamburg Season at QPAC, featuring the Hamburg State Opera, the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra and The Hamburg Ballet, would run between 23 August and 5 September 2012.
“The Hamburg Season is the first of the QPAC International Series which enhances our reputation for hosting innovative and inspiring arts and cultural events,” Ms Bates said.
“Having not just one but three world class companies perform exclusively in Brisbane is a real coup.
“The QPAC International Series means Queenslanders no longer have to travel interstate or overseas to enjoy the best international performing arts companies. In fact, we expect people will travel to Brisbane for these exclusive performances.
“Last year’s live simulcast of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to six venues around Queensland effectively doubled the number of people who saw the performance.”
The Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra is led by Australian-born conductor Simone Young, recognised as one of the leading conductors of her generation and the first woman to conduct the complete Ring Cycle of Richard Wagner.
Regional cities participating in the live simulcast of the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra are: Bundaberg (Moncrieff Entertainment Centre); Cairns (Fogarty Park Sound Shell as part of the Cairns Festival); Mackay (Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre); Mount Isa (Mount Isa Civic Centre); Toowoomba (Empire Theatre) and Townsville (Civic Theatre).
Live coverage starts at 7.30pm on Friday 24 August and the performance at 8pm. Admission is free but bookings, via each venue, are essential.
