Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing
The Honourable Steve Dickson

Recreation and Sport Minister Steve Dickson officially opened a new multi-use community sporting facility at Perry Park in Brisbane today.

Mr Dickson said the $11 million state-of-the-art facility would cater for a huge range of sporting and recreational activities including soccer, netball, basketball and futsal.

“Perry Park has long been considered the spiritual home of soccer in Brisbane, and this great new facility has given the grounds a much needed facelift,” Mr Dickson said.

“The opportunities for community involvement Perry Park now offers are enormous, with the YMCA set to offer programs ranging from weight training and indoor cycling to children’s gymnastics and vacation care.

“Meanwhile, the Brisbane Strikers have been given the infrastructure to take soccer forward in South East Queensland and the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association will also be helped with accessible training grounds, rather than travelling outside Brisbane to practice.

“This facility is a wonderful example of a Queensland project which supports the Newman Government focus on encouraging sports development at the grassroots community level.”

Mr Dickson said the Queensland Government had contributed $4 million towards the new centre.

“I congratulate everyone who has provided funding to make this facility a reality, particularly the YMCA of Brisbane which has provided services and programs to the community since 1864,” he said.

“We want all Queenslanders to get involved in sport from an early age and have access to sporting opportunities wherever they live in Queensland.

“That’s why we’ve committed to supporting them through our $16 million Get in the Game initiative.

“Get in the Game is about providing better equipment and facilities at the grassroots and giving children who might not otherwise be able to afford it the chance to get involved with sport.

“Our local focus could also inspire some of our future sporting stars. Students as young as 10 years old going to school today will be eligible to compete at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.”
