The Wulgurukaba People will tomorrow be granted inalienable freehold title to six hectares of land on Magnetic Island.

Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps said the land at West Point will be transferred to its Traditional Owners at a ceremony on Magnetic Island attended by the Member for Thuringowa Sam Cox.

“A Deed of Grant will be handed over by the State to the Wulgurukaba Yunbenun Aboriginal Corporation,” Mr Cripps said.

“The Corporation will hold the land as Aboriginal freehold for the benefit of Aboriginal people particularly concerned with the land and their ancestors and descendants.

“The land will be transferred under the Aboriginal Land Act 1991 and is the result of an Indigenous Land Use Agreement between the State Government and the Wulgurukaba People.

Mr Cripps said under the agreement, the Wulgurukaba People would receive a further 1.8 hectares in ordinary freehold as well as trusteeship of 55 hectares of newly created reserve under the Nature Conservation Act 1992.

“The Department of Natural Resources and Mines (NRM) has consulted with the Wulgurukaba People over the future of the West Point land over a number of years,” Mr Cripps said.

Member for Thuringowa Sam Cox said he was proud to be representing the Queensland Government at tomorrow’s ceremony.

“The Wulgurukaba Yunbenun Aboriginal Corporation plans to establish a cultural camp on the land,” he said.

“This is a terrific outcome and I commend the Wulgurukaba People and local NRM staff for the dedication and hard work that was necessary to achieve this outcome.”
