Minister for Natural Resources and Mines
The Honourable Andrew Cripps

Minister for Natural Resources and Mines and Member for Hinchinbrook Andrew Cripps today handed over the deeds to 89 hectares of land at Mission Beach to Traditional Owners, the Djiru people.

Mr Cripps said the return of the five parcels of land was an historic moment and would give the Djiru people responsibility for development and use of the land.

“It is theirs to hold - not just for now, but for future generations,” he said.

Mr Cripps said the handover created an opportunity for the Djiru people to undertake cultural activities and encouraged generational sharing of traditional knowledge and practices.

“In handing back these parcels of land, we ensure issues concerned with the traditional management of these lands will be central to future planning and a shared vision for future use,” Mr Cripps said

“I would like to acknowledge the cooperative spirit of the Djiru people during these negotiations and applaud the positive outcomes for the entire community.

“As the local Member of Parliament for the Mission Beach area, I have always valued the strong working relationship I have with the Djiru people and the Girringun Aboriginal Corporation, and respect the positive and cooperative approach they take to issues concerning local traditional owners.”

The Djiru people participated in extensive negotiations with the government regarding tenure resolution and the complexities of an Indigenous Land Use Agreement.

The title deed was presented to Djiru Warrangburra Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (known as Djiru RNTBC) at a ceremony conducted at Castaways Resort, Mission Beach.

Mr Cripps said Djiru RNTBC would hold freehold title to the land for the benefit of the native title holders of the land, the Djiru people.

“I know this means a lot to the Djiru people and I hope this process provides a strong ongoing cultural connection to country,’ Mr Cripps said.
