Primary School students to benefit from Educational Safety Program

Minister for Police and Community Safety
The Honourable Jack Dempsey

Surfers Paradise Primary School will be a hive of activity today when Police Minister Jack Dempsey joins local officers to deliver presentations and display crime fighting hardware as part of the Educational Safety Program.

Officers from the Traffic Branch, Mounted Police, Dog Squad and the Water Police will be at the event, giving demonstrations on how they are utilised in Queensland Police Service (QPS) operations.

The students will also learn about the QPS Rhino vehicle and experience a fly-by from the Police Helicopter.

Mr Dempsey said the presentation aims to inform and reflect on ways that students can make safe choices both at school and in the community.

“This event is one that truly engages students through the safety advice of officers from all spectrums of policing in addition to a visually impressive display of policing tools,” Mr Dempsey said.

“Importantly students will learn that police officers are approachable, trustworthy and always there to provide guidance for the community, especially the younger members.

“The Newman Government is committed to the continued positive interaction between QPS and students and this is why we have committed another 15 police officers towards the School-Based Policing program.”

Adopt-A-Cops Constables Tracy Godwin and Deb Pokai will run the Educational Safety Program that has been designed to encourage good citizenship through QPS learning resources.

“In our role as Adopt-A-Cop we always encourage students to think about the ways they interact with people and also how they follow guidelines, identify risks and apply safe practices.

"This ties in well with the Surfers Paradise Primary School’s motto of making safe choices in the Right Place, Right Time,” Constable Goodwin said.

“This will be a fun and informative day for the students and they will come away with a greater understanding of community safety and responsibility.”
