Premier and Minister for Reconstruction
The Honourable Anna Bligh
Premier Anna Bligh today announced more than $1.5 million in grants to help “reinvigorate” communities affected by Cyclone Yasi.
One year on from the devastating cyclone, 36 organisations from across the state’s north will receive up to $50,000 per project under the Queensland Government’s Rural Resilience Community Grants program.
The Premier said local groups had applied for the money to spend on initiatives to improve life in their communities.
“Twelve months after the cyclone, we haven’t forgotten the people who endured it and we continue to support their efforts to return to everyday life.
“The projects are about really practical measures that can make a big difference.
“Replacing damaged playground equipment and storage sheds, restoring community meeting areas, and providing mental health and fitness programs can really boost the well being of communities.
“The successful applicants include schools, indigenous groups, community centres and local councils.
“Our focus is to foster social and economic recovery,” she said.
Regional Economies Minister Tim Mulherin said the projects being supported included redevelopment of the Cassowary Coast foreshore and a community playground at Tully Heads, the replacement of playground equipment for the Jumbun community, and a therapy and well-being centre at Tully State School.
He said the grants were made available under the $20 million Rural Resilience package to applicants in the Cassowary Coast, Hinchinbrook and parts of Cairns, Charters Towers, Etheridge, Flinders and Tablelands Council areas.
The total funding for the 41 approved projects is $1.562 million. A detailed list is attached.
