Police Minister Neil Roberts and Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson today joined local dignitaries, police and emergency services officers and community members at the official opening of the refurbished Beenleigh Police facility.

The $8.3 million refurbishment most notably includes the construction of the new Regional Communications Centre that is a combination of two former police communication centres at Beenleigh and Broadbeach.

Police Minister Neil Roberts said the larger Communications Centre would service the wider South Eastern Police Region, which encompassed three of Queensland’s busiest police districts, Logan, Coomera and the Gold Coast.

“The new Communications Centre became operational in November and is staffed with a mixture of police and civilian operators as the first point of contact for all ‘000’ calls from across the South Eastern police region.

“It services an area from Springwood in the north, west to Browns Plains, south through Rathdowney to the New South Wales border and east to Coolangatta and all areas in between.

“It will also have the capacity to take overflow calls from a number of other police communications centres around the State.”

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said the refurbished facility would assist the Queensland Police Service’s ongoing commitment to make Queensland, particularly the South East, a safer place for all.

“With closed circuit television feeds from around the Region and a purpose built major incident room equipped with the latest computer and audio visual equipment; the facility will significantly increase the QPS ability to respond to and manage incidents.”

Member for Waterford Evan Moorhead said the Beenleigh Police Station and Communications Centre were operational 24 hours a day.

“These facilities are the base for policing services across a diverse area, servicing coastal residential and acreage properties, along with a large industrial body, as well as being the hub for Jacobs Well, Eagleby and Norfolk Village Police Beats.

“65 officers work from the Beenleigh Station and include officers from the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) and Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU).

“It will also be home to the Logan District Prosecution Corp, which provide services to the Central Division of the Brisbane Magistrates Court District.

Member for Springwood Barbara Stone said the upgrades to the facility had been completed in three stages.

“The new communications centre and the refurbishment works to the station are a real shot in the arm for local policing and I’m sure local residents are glad to see the completion of this important community project.”

Member for Albert Margaret Keech said specialist policing units had received upgrades in the refurbishment process.

“The refurbishment of the station included the construction of a specific room for the interviewing of children by the CPIU.”

“Coupled with the purpose-built major incident room to allow for the management of serious or protracted incidents, the ability of local police to respond to serious incidents has received a significant boost.”

Member for Woodridge Desley Scott said the centre and station had been designed to allow for a multi agency response to an incident should this be necessary.

“The improvements to the Beenleigh Police Station and Communications Centre are indicative of the Queensland Government’s commitment to ensuring that Queenslanders live and work in a safe environment.”
