The Bligh Government has joined forces with a private marine industry company to secure the future of the Cairns Slipway and the local marine industry.
Deputy Premier and Treasurer Andrew Fraser, in Cairns today, said Australian ship repair company, BSE Maritime Solutions and Ports North had penned a deal to breathe new life into the Slipway which had been placed into receivership in July 2010.
“The Bligh Government and BSE have signed an agreement today that will see Ports North invest more than $2.5 million to purchase part of the slipway land, and BSE invest substantially more for the remaining land, including buildings and equipment located on the site,” Mr Fraser said.
“It is great news for the future of the marine industry in Cairns that BSE’s investment also includes substantial remediation works to the site and water leases as a condition of its successful bid.
“By combining our efforts we are making a solid commitment to the long-term growth of the marine industry, which employs 20,000 people in Cairns.”
Mr Fraser said the announcement followed the Bligh Government releasing a new economic strategy, Cairns Region Economic Future 2012-15, which focused on strengthening traditional industries such as the marine sector and diversifying the economy in areas like education and mining services.
Member for Cairns Desley Boyle said the agreement ensured that the Port of Cairns would continue to provide substantial slipway services well into the future.
“The slipway is absolutely important to the health of the port and the city and we want it to continue to support jobs for our local economy,” Ms Boyle said.
“That’s why we entered into negotiations with the receivers to see what action we could take to save it.
“I’m very pleased that as a result of our involvement, the Cairns Slipway will continue operating.”
The Ports North investment to purchase the freehold land on which part of the slipway operates means there is land for the slipway to operate and grow.
BSE Business Development Manager Denis Maher said: “We at BSE are confident that under our management of the iconic Cairns Slipways facility will continue to set new standards in the repair and refit of luxury yachts, defence and commercial vessels for many years to come.
“We are pleased that Ports North saw the importance in our proposition to expand and sustain such a tremendous site.
“We are looking forward to working with the local marine industries and our intention is to support the positive approach that has been directed towards further development of the marine industries in Cairns.
“BSE also appreciates the support and active encouragement shown by various Cairns associations and groups. They have been very helpful.”
