The Laidley sports community is being encouraged to take advantage of the Bligh Government’s free Strength and Conditioning Workshop on Thursday, 9 February.

Sport Minister Phil Reeves said the workshop is a great opportunity for athletes, coaches, teachers and parents to learn more about core strength and conditioning from former rugby league and international level coach Chris Weier.

“This workshop will offer participants some great tips on how to make the most out of strength and conditioning sessions that meet individual goals and time restraints,” Mr Reeves said.

“Chris will cover a range of topics including building strength, program structure, integrating strength and skill training, age considerations and core strength training.

“The forum is an ideal avenue for participants to tap into a wealth of sporting expertise.”

Mr Reeves said across Queensland, thousands of people such as coaches, teachers and parents devote hours of their own time to support and develop the sport they love.

“That’s why these programs are vitally important in providing sport participants and their support teams with the skills they need to stay involved in their chosen sport,” he said.

“Under the Bligh Government’s Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland vision, we’re committed to increasing the percentage of the population involved in volunteering.

“One of the best ways to do this is to provide support for programs and services which build the skills and capacity of club volunteers.

“This workshop will also help the Government work towards its goal of helping Queenslanders become Australia’s healthiest people by reducing obesity levels by one third by 2020.

“This is why we continue to provide support for programs, projects and facilities which help people of all ages participate in sport and active recreation.

“Developing sport at the grassroots right up to the elite level heightens our chances of hosting events, and reinforces our reputation as the Champions State and the Events State as well.

“The Government has made the tough economic decisions to ensure we can continue to support local sport and recreation.”
