The Honourable Simon Finn
Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine and Building Industry Minister Simon Finn have congratulated 12 eager new tradies from the Darling Downs region on being offered an apprenticeship with QBuild.
Mr Shine said the 12 were among 100 new apprentices and trainees taking up a position with the State Government’s construction and maintenance organisation in 2011.
The new apprentices in the Darling Downs region include:
Toowoomba – Lachlan Berlin, Carpenter; Michael Casey, Electrical Mechanic; Zane Rudan, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning; Ashley Taylor, Carpentry School Based Apprenticeship; Bradley Taylor Refrigeration and Air Conditioning; Trent Tuesley, Electrical Mechanic; Nicholas Weber, Carpenter
Roma – Kirsty Blinco, Carpenter; Hayden Laverty, Carpentry School Based Apprenticeship
St George – Paul Harrison, Carpenter
Chincilla - James Briggs, Carpenter
Mr Shine said the new QBuild apprentices were embarking on an exciting new career path.
“The building and construction industry is essential to communities throughout the Darling Downs,” he said.
“These new apprentices have a great opportunity to contribute to the economic development of our region.
“QBuild will give them the skills they need to build strong careers and I wish them all the best for the future.”
Mr Finn said this week sees future tradespeople starting careers with QBuild across the state ranging from carpentry and plumbing to shop-fitting.
“QBuild is one of the largest employers of construction and engineering industry apprentices in Queensland and received more than 3900 applications for this year’s apprentice intake,” Mr Finn said.
“This State Government training initiative is a real investment in the future of our state's building industry as many QBuild apprentices eventually find work in the private sector.
”QBuild apprentices gain experience in the maintenance of government buildings, including schools, as well as helping construct new building projects throughout their region.”
“All apprentices and trainees will begin their careers with safety training and the provision of work-related equipment before they start learning on site.
“QBuild provides uniforms, footwear, protective equipment and tools of trade as required.
"The skills the apprentices gain as they advance through their apprenticeships will give them a head start in the industry, equipping them with life-long trade skills that will enhance their career prospects,” he said.
