Premier and Minister for Reconstruction
The Honourable Anna Bligh
Premier Anna Bligh and Member for Burleigh Christine Smith today announced a $1.5 million Police Beat will be built at Burleigh Heads with additional police positions based onsite.
In another major boost, 45 extra police positions will be allocated to the wider Gold Coast, Coomera and Logan Districts this year.
“This is a big shot in the arm for policing in the area - putting police in a prime frontline position where they’re needed,” Ms Bligh said.
“It’s a boost to local Police numbers, with a minimum of six new Police positions to be based on-site.
“That means a more visible Police presence in what is a very popular and busy Gold Coast precinct, which in turn will help to prevent crime and foster a safer community.
“It follows tenacious lobbying from Christine Smith who is a tireless worker for her electorate.
“Just last week she lodged a petition in State Parliament signed by hundreds of local residents in support of this Police Beat,” she said.
Funding for the project has been allocated from $2 million originally earmarked to upgrade the existing Burleigh Police complex.
Mrs Smith said the Police Beat was a big win for the Burleigh community.
“A permanent uniformed presence will be a great thing for the Burleigh community – residents, tourists and businesses alike,” she said.
“The Police Beat will operate Monday to Friday, with the option to operate longer hours and over the weekend at peak times depending on demand.
“I thank the Queensland Police Service, the Gold Coast City Council and most of all the local Burleigh community for their ongoing support in this regard.
“Just days ago the Council formally voted in support of the initiative and has proposed parkland bounded by Goodwin Terrace and Hayle Street as a possible location.
“Their proposal is currently being considered and it’s hoped the location of the Beat will be finalised in the very near future. Community consultation will be an important part of this process.”
Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said officers based at the Police Beat would continue to work with officers from Palm Beach and the wider Gold Coast district to keep the Burleigh community safe.
“The six police positions to be based at the Burleigh Police Beat when it opens will be in addition to 45 extra police positions to be allocated to the wider Gold Coast, Coomera and Logan Districts this year,” Mr Atkinson said.
“It’s great to see police numbers growing, especially in key areas like the Gold Coast.”
The growth in police numbers is part of the 203 extra police positions the Government committed to deliver in the 2010/11 financial year.
The remainder of the $2 million will be spent on an upgrade of the existing Burleigh Heads Police Complex located in Matilda Street, Burleigh Heads in line with the 2009 election commitment.
