Minister for Local Government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships
The Honourable Desley Boyle

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Desley Boyle today encouraged Brisbane residents to head along to Musgrave Park for the annual NAIDOC Week Family Fun Day on Friday July 9.

“Get down to Musgrave Park and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture,” Ms Boyle said.

“The Musgrave Park Family Fun Day has become a signature event on the NAIDOC calendar.

“It is a day packed with traditional dance and music performances, art and craft, amusement rides, food and refreshment stalls, including bush tucker.

“Musgrave Park is a great place for this celebration because it has always held a special place in Indigenous culture.

“The area was once ceremonial land and it is in fact the site of a buried bora ring sacred to the Traditional Owners.

Ms Boyle said NAIDOC Week was a good time to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

“They are among the oldest living cultures in the world spanning back more than 50,000 years,” she said.

“There have been a range of events held across Queensland this week including breakfasts, flag raisings, workshops and family days.

“This year the theme built on the Preamble that was added to the Queensland Constitution in February.”

The Preamble recognises and honours Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as:

the First Australians, whose lands, winds and waters we all now share; and pay tribute to the unique values, and their ancient and enduring cultures, which deep and enrich the life of our community.

The Musgrave Park Family Fun Day will run from 9am until 10pm. Entry is free for children with adult entry via a gold coin donation.

Musgrave Park is located between Cordelia, Edmonstone and Russell Streets, South Brisbane.
