Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Police Minister Neil Roberts, Member for Cook Jason O’Brien and Assistant Commissioner Andy Henderson today officially opened the new $7.1 million state-of-the-art Mareeba Police Station and watchhouse.
Mr O’Brien said the replacement station and watchhouse would provide a significant enhancement to policing resources in the area.
“The Mareeba area is rapidly growing, and with that growth comes a need for enhanced community services in the area,” Mr O’Brien said.
“The new station will accommodate an Officer-in-Charge, 28 general duties officers, two Police Liaison Officers, three administrative staff, as well as officers from the Mareeba District Prosecutions Corps,” he said.
“This new station will boost local policing resources, providing officers with a modern, world-class facility to work from.
“The police station and watchhouse have been fitted out with state of the art technology including a Communications Room for Mareeba District, reception, Prosecutions office, dayroom, meals room, exhibit store, property room, electronic interview rooms, conference rooms, toilet facilities, access for persons with disabilities, and a direct link between the watchhouse and the courts.
“This massive investment in policing resources in Far North Queensland shows the Government’s commitment to enhancing community safety in this area.”
Mr Roberts said the Bligh Government was committed to providing the Queensland Police Service (QPS) with the resources, equipment and facilities needed to maintain safe and secure communities throughout Queensland.
“In 2009-10, the Bligh Government delivered a record $1.706 billion budget for the QPS,” Mr Roberts said.
“By making the tough decisions, we are able to continue our 3-year, $126 million Police capital works program, renovating and building new stations across Queensland to support our hard-working officers and increase safety for the wider community.”
Assistant Commissioner Henderson said the new resources were important for the local community as the Queensland Police Service continued to ensure it met the needs of people throughout the state.
“This station, built in consultation with operational police, will allow for improved service delivery to the Mareeba community,” Asst Commissioner Henderson said.
“The Queensland Police Service has a proud history of serving the community of Mareeba.
“Today’s opening demonstrates that we are not only prepared for the immediate needs of this district but are in a very good position to ensure that we meet policing requirements well into the future.”
The Officer-in-Charge of Mareeba Police Station is Senior Sergeant Richard Kroon, an experienced police officer, who transferred to his current position in July 2006.
The station is located at 167 Walsh Street, Mareeba.
