New life for ten Central Queensland community memorials
Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten has congratulated five Central Queensland councils and organisations on receiving funding in the latest and final round of the Queensland Government’s Community Memorials Restoration Program.
Mr Schwarten said the councils had been granted more than $96,000 to help restore 10 projects in the Central Queensland region.
“The Community Memorials Restoration Program plays an instrumental role helping to restore local history and the Queensland Government is pleased to be able to assist with these projects,” Mr Schwarten said.
Mr Schwarten said in 2009-10, Community Memorials Restoration Program grants totalling more than $598,000 had been allocated to 53 restoration projects across Queensland.
“Of those more than half involve work on war memorials, 19 have been allocated to cemetery related projects with the remaining 9 being undertaken on community icons.
“Since the program commenced in 2004-05 more than $3 million has been committed towards restoring and repairing more than 290 memorials or icons, restoring historical grave sites and digitising historical cemetery records,” he said.
“It has been vital that we have kept the ball rolling since the program commenced in 2004 so as many Queensland communities as possible can preserve their unique and rich historical markers for future generations,” she said.
The Community Memorial Restoration Program grants councils and local organisations one dollar for every dollar they spend to the value of $25,000 for war memorial/community icon projects and up to $15,000 for cemetery related projects.

Blackall-Tambo Regional Council. To relocate, refurbish and redesign the Tambo War Memorial plinth. To be enhanced by the creation of a central cenotaph and memorial precinct suitable for commemorative services. Tambo. $20,258.79.
Barcaldine Regional Council. To repaint gates and badges and repair shelter shed in Barcaldine's lawn cemetery. Barcaldine. $3,050.00.
Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council. To upgrade, identify, notate, sign and record the old historical section of Woorabinda Cemetery. Woorabinda. $15,000.00.
Longreach Archival and Historical Research Group Inc. To restore graves, add plaques and mark the historical Arrilalah Cemetery. Arrilalah. $2,000.00.
Central Highlands Regional Council.To restore the Bluff War Memorial with additional landscaping and lighting. Bluff. $2,500.00.
Barcaldine Regional Council. Collate and digitise all cemetery registers, remote graves and other significant sites, interpretive selected sites and upload all information to council's website to make more accessible. Barcaldine. $12,000.00.
Central Highlands Regional Council. To repair the Bogantungan Railway Station and museum, and provide interpretive signage. Bogantungan. $8,000.00.
Barcaldine Regional Council. Relocate, repair, clean, repaint, research and interpret three pre-World War One cannons. Barcaldine. $7,350.00.
Blackall-Tambo Regional Council. To research, record and digitise the Blackall Cemetery and make the records available to the general public in a simplistic and easy to use digital format. Blackall. $15,000.00.
