Maleny–Kenilworth Road upgrades complete
Work on two Maleny–Kenilworth Road upgrade projects, as part of a $15 million package aimed at improving safety and travelling conditions on the popular tourist route, are now complete.
Acting Main Roads Minister Rachel Nolan said the Bligh Government had invested millions of dollars in Maleny–Kenilworth Road as part of its ongoing commitment to improving safety on state-controlled roads.
“More than $4.5 million was spent upgrading Reesville Road intersection and $4.4 million to upgrade between Fritz Gully and Jager Drive,” Ms Nolan said.
“Work started on both projects earlier this year and included realigning the Reesville Road intersection, replacing the existing timber bridge over Fritz Gully with a new concrete structure and widening and reconstructing the road at both locations to improve pavement strength and durability.”
Ms Nolan said Maleny–Kenilworth Road was a vital connection that supported the agriculture, farming and timber industries for which the region was well known.
“Maleny–Kenilworth Road is also a popular scenic route carrying in excess of 3000 vehicles a day on some sections,” she said.
“In addition to improving safety and freight efficiency, upgrades boost employment and often save taxpayer dollars by increasing the road’s resistance to general wear and tear and reducing ongoing maintenance costs.
“Around 72 direct and indirect jobs have been generated by these two construction projects alone.”
Ms Nolan said the Government would like to thank the local community and motorists for their patience and cooperation throughout the construction period.
