One-stop health centre opens at Browns Plains

Southside Brisbane residents will soon have access to a $26.4 million all-in-one health centre in Browns Plains.
Queensland Treasurer and Acting Health Minister Andrew Fraser, who opened the Browns Plains Community Health Centre today, said the facility would reduce unnecessary hospital visits and provide a coordinated response to health care needs in the area.
“This $26.4 million health centre has been specially designed to deliver multiple services including clinical, aged care, mental health and children’s health,” Mr Fraser said.
“Centres like this have the potential to ease hospital strain by avoiding unnecessary hospitalisations because primary care is provided on the spot.
A Smart State Building Initiative, the project was designed following extensive input from health care professionals, ensuring the layout and structure met contemporary healthcare needs.
“The BPCHC reflects modern thinking in health promotion – the design, the models of care used here and the coordinated approach of health service delivery,” Mr Fraser said.
“The centre provides community based health management, health promotion and early intervention for people in suburbs ranging from Calamvale and Browns Plains, to Jimboomba in the South and Park Ridge in the North.
“The co-location of services also enables better patient management and follow-up as the necessary services are located under the same roof.
“The centre has also delivered 80 additional jobs, with approximately 120 staff members from Logan Hospital and the Logan Central Community Health Centre transferring to the BPCHC.”
Mr Fraser also opened a new Department of Education and Training Early Years Centre, located alongside the BPCHC, which provides a range of parenting and family support services.
“The Bligh Government provided more than $3 million towards the construction of the centre, and will provide The Benevolent Society with an additional $1.3 million a year for three years for its operation, as well as $250 000 for set-up costs,” he said.
“The centre will offer family day care, playgroups, child health and development and parenting support, as well as health screening and access to immunisations and pre and post-natal care.
“The centre’s services will be integrated with other local service providers, including Queensland Health, as well as other visiting specialists such as speech and occupational therapists.”
“More than 700 families are expected to use the Early Years Centre each month.”
The Browns Plains Community Health Centre will provide:
• Aged Care and Cardiac Rehabilitation services
• Children's Health Services, including antenatal care and developmental paediatrics services
• Adult Community Mental Health Services
• Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drugs Services
• Child and Youth Mental Health Services
• Oral Health Services
• Chronic Disease Prevention and Management services, and;
• A new Logan Population Health Unit.
